Athletes, Race And Political Correctness
Come on now… stop acting as though you haven’t noticed the skin color of athletes playing sports. I’m sure you’ve wondered why some positions or sports are populated by a certain ethnicity. It’s ok to think about it but why is it taboo to talk about it or have an opinion without feeling like you’ve done something wrong?
That’s the pressure that society places on its citizenry. It’s almost a crime to even think about the differences between the races.
Let me share a little secret with you… in the locker room there is no such thing as “Political Correctness.” If you could be a fly on the wall you’d enjoy the most engaging, colorful, and carefree conversations between men/women athletes regardless of their background.
This (athletic) society is something that needs to be applauded and is the utopia our country (sometimes) desires to be. Black, Latino and White players work, dress , shower, eat and travel together. They spend more time together than they do with their families. In fact, they become an extended family.
A white athlete can (and does) make “black jokes” to his African-American teammates and the same happens in reverse. Race should be and is a non-issue on the playing fields and courts amoung the diverse members of its participants.
Can fans and jounalists say the same?
