Venus IV Wows Wimbledon
Venus Williams served and screamed her way into the history books of womens tennis by winning her 4th Wimbledon Singles Title on Saturday, July 7, 2007.
Hang # 4 with the titles earned in 2000, 2001 and 2005. She won it with her tremendous power, strategy and athleticism over Marion Bartoli who was clearly impressed by Williams. “Sometimes it was hurting my wrist so bad because the ball was coming so fast to me,” Bartoli said. “So I really try my best, I think, and I play a great match, but at the end she was just too good.”
Williams is now part of a fraternity that includes only three other women who collected at least 4 Wimbledon titles: Billie Jean King (6), Martina Navratilova (9) and Steffi Graf (7). These women are clearly recognized as the greatest in the history of their sport and they must make room for the tall, thin girl from Compton, CA.
Somewhere in Heaven, Althea Gibson smiled as she watched Williams win the title today. Gibson took a little time to reflect on her legacy which made it possible for Venus and Serena Williams to follow after her. What an awesome tribute by Venus by showing such grace and style on the 50th anniversary of Gibson becoming the first black to win a Wimbledon title.
Urban Sports Talk honors your accomplishment today Ms. Williams. We look forward to much greater victories on and off the tennis court. Peace.
