After two games, the new Miami Heat haven’t changed the face of the NBA. Is this threesome even the best team in Florida? We’ll see tonight in their home opener against the powerful Orlando Magic and Dwight “Superman” Howard.

There he is…MY MAN! Doin what he do…doing it the way he do it. Another game win or loss, another trot off the court for my guy who always make me chuckle because he gets it!
He just enjoys the moment for what it is, this is one of the best people in the NBA… DJ 19, Damon Jones currently of the Milwaukee Bucks. Here is a young man who has started in the NBA Finals and rode buses in the Black Hills of South Dakota in the CBA. Here is a young man that was a ball boy for the championship teams back in Houston in the mid 90s, but has played side by side with all-stars Dwayne Wade, LeBron James and in his 1st run here with Michael Redd in Milwaukee. Here is a young man that was undrafted out of the University of Houston, but has been on MTV Cribs and co-hosted Dick Clark’s New Years Eve Party in New York.
So many contradictions, but like the transformers…there is more that meets the eye? I sat down with DJ 19 and asked him a few questions about being in the league for this long, and how he has done it. Although the Bucks are the only team he has played for twice in his career, he has enjoyed being on ten other teams.
I asked him how he keeps so even keel and he told me several things help him with that. “By keeping my mind fresh and going one day at a time, it helps me focus and since I have seen it all in this league, I try to share a lot of those experiences with the young guys.” Every player, and just about every coach I spoke to about Damon said the same thing, it was said over and over about his attitude, which is basically this…he takes the game very serious, but not to the point it isn’t fun to play the game. DJ 19 did acknowledge in our conversation that their have been peaks and vallys. “A lot of highs and lows.” He also reminded me to tell any young ball-players out there. “No one can ever tell you or dictate how you want your career to go…ever!” Not bad for a career 40% FG and a 39% 3pt FG shooter, 647 games (and counting) and more importantly 6 post seasons in ten years.
For a guy that never saw a seven figure salary until he joined the Miami Heat in the 2004-05 season, he has never shown outwardly signs of that petty jealousy or politics that I seen destroy teams, locker rooms and communities.
So I send this shout out to people who are tired of all the negativity, bad actors and actions in the very insulated world of professional sports, here is a guy you can cheer for who came from the bottom and is still trying to reach the top.

“I spent the past year rehabbing and thinking about my basketball future,” Mourning told a news conference. “After 16 years I truly feel its best I retire.
‘At 38 I feel like I’ve physically done all I can for this game. God knows it’s been an amazing ride.”
Zo annouced his retirement today and will move forward with the many charitable and business ventures he is involved in. He was a power player with an intensity that was rarely matched by the other players in the league. He leaves the game as a champion on and off the court… this 7-time NBA All-star will be missed.
Respect to Zo and his family.
It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to, cry if I want to, cry if I want to.
December 30th has not been a great day for the King…on the basketball court!
Despite the day serving as a celebration for his 24 years of royal living, he still managed to add a huge “L” to his team’s record. The James Gang is now 26-5 as the Miami Heat defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 104-95, last night at the AmericanAirlines Arena.
LeBron James danced all night long but it didn’t turn out the way that he thought it would. He seemed to have reached his groove when he drained a three point basket in the corner with 8:55 remaining in the fourth quarter to bring the Cavs to within one point at 78-77. After he nailed the shot, he looked down at a falling Michael Beasley as well as the Heat’s bench as if he was telling them to “get like me!”
James finished the night with 38 buckets, 2 boards, 7 dimes, and 2 beats (…including a nasty one on The Flash).
After losing this game, LeBron’s professionl record has fell to 0-3 on his birthday including a loss while he was in high school.
You would cry too if it happened to you!
The King made Dwyane Wade look rather normal as he took the challenge of guarding him throughout most of the game. Wade finished the game with ONLY 21 points (…he’s leading the league with 28.9 points per game people) on 7-23 shooting. He did hand out 12 dimes though and pinned James’ shot off the glass early in the third quarter.
When Wade ran out on the King in the fourth quarter, he just calmly nailed three point bomb all in his grill at the 2:27. I could really see that LeBron was trying to outduel Dwyane because he was making it a point to go at him.
The one possession that sticks out in my the most is when Dwyane Wade went up for a dunk over the King, and he came out of nowhere and batted it out of the hoop even though he was called for a foul. It was just the “princibality” (…as Big Worm would say).
But in the end, I’m sure The King was not happy with his birthday present. It was his party though, so I’m sure he’ll cry if he wants too.
Give the man a break if he decides to let go a few tears…You would cry too if it happened to you!
The James Gang will pick back up on their action next year when they face the Chicago Bulls on Jan. 2 at The Q.
Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union are competing hard for the 2008 celebrity couple of the year. Wade has had a tough year personally (divorce) but is doing his thing on the court this year once again. It’s been two years since DW won the NBA Title and was the toast of the sports world… looks like Ms. Union has him right once again. Some cats have so much game it ain’t even funny.
